12 Things Every Writer Knows to be True

Hey, everyone! Today I am doing a super fun post that I have been wanting to do for a while! I did two posts a while ago with 12 Things Every __________  Knows to be True. There is one about large families, and one about homeschoolers, but I thought that it was about time I did one about writers!

There are just certain things about writers that we can't deny. I guess it all comes as a package deal. The book obsessions, hoarding pens, and weird daydreams are all just a part of the writer's life. SO, here are 12 things that every writer knows to be true!

1.) Owning TONS of notebooks and pens
I'm pretty sure every writer can testify to having a ridiculous amount of notebooks and pens. Recently, I went through my closet and found that I have over 65 of them. Too many? Nah.

2.) Procrastination
It seems like every time I sit down to write, everything else is suddenly interesting. I suddenly remember that email I have been forgetting to reply to, and oh look! The sky looks really pretty right now! Hang on..let me take some pictures..I can write when I'm done.

3.) Alllll the questions
Whenever people find out that I am a writer, they start asking questions. Answering those questions is always so awkward, too! Those conversations generally go like this : "What do you write about?" "Well, I kind of write about real stuff but not really it's kind of a mix of everything." or "Are you going to get published?" "Ummm hopefully I mean I want to...I mean...uh..yeah."
After hearing many of the same questions and awkwardly trying to answer them, you eventually come up with some vague (or maybe still awkward idk) replies that you can use for most of the questions you get asked.

4.) Staying home so you can write
Maybe I'm the only one that has done this, but if it has been a really busy week, I like to take a whole day to focus on writing. Sometimes you have to turn down invites to things because of it, but hey...you gotta get those words down on the page, right?

5.) Finding pens in random places
Something that goes along with having lots of pens (and being a writer) is that you find them in random places all the time. In your drawer, in your closet, underneath your bed, in your shoes, EVERYWHERE. It can be so exciting when you find your favorite pen after looking for it for forever!

6.) Zoning out all the time
There have been several times that I have started thinking about a novel idea or even a book that I am reading, and before I know it, I am completely lost in la-la-land. It happens all the time. Anywhere. And I don't even realize that I'm doing it until something drastic snaps me back to reality.

7.) The collections of old "novels" that you wrote
Chances are, if you are a writer, you loved to write stories as a kid. You probably still have a big collection of the "novels" that you were sure would get published. It is always fun to look back on those and laugh (or cringe) at your writing!

8.) The awesomeness of getting a quiet hour to write
I get the most writing done when it is dead silent in the room. It is always so rare and amazing when it is super quiet and I can finally focus and actually write! Sometimes it takes getting up earlier in the morning or waiting until night, but it is always worth it, and amazing while it lasts!

9.) Waking up in the middle of the night with ideas
I think every writer ever can identify with this one. It may be a novel idea, it may be some thoughts that you just have to get down on a piece of paper, or that perfect sentence that you needed to get your story going again. Either way, waking up in the middle of the night can either be super awesome or super annoying, depending on how tired you are.

10.) People giving you their story ideas
Sometimes, when people find out that you are a writer, they like to give you their ideas for books. This has happened to me a few times, and it's kind of funny. I have gotten a really good idea presented that I actually might use someday, too!

11.) Writer's block
Those are the two most dreaded words when you are trying to write. It is a very real thing that is SO frustrating!! It isn't preventable, and it's usually a very unpleasant surprise. *repeated head banging on the keyboard*

12.) Books, books, and more books
I. LOVE. BOOKS. I think every writer you talk to will say the same thing. Our book collections are very extensive, and we are always willing to get more. And more. And more. Reading is one of the most fun ways to get inspiration, and I have found that the more I read, the more I want to write my own stuff!

Writing is probably the most weird, difficult, mood-swingy (wait is that even a word??) things out there, but with all of that, it is still amazing. Sure, there will be some super frustrating, difficult days, but I wouldn't ever quit or go back, because I am doing what I love to do.

I hope you could identify with these things, laugh a little, and celebrate being a writer, because honestly? Writers are FABULOUS PEOPLE. Shoot for the stars, my lovely crazies!! :) ♥

What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
Do you have any weird little quirks?

Have a lovely day!! :)

  9. WOW YES I CAN RELATE TO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE. *hugs this post and probably eats it because i love it so much* LOLOLOL I HAVE A SMALL PROBLEM WITH COLLECTING NOTEBOOKS. (Oh and of course most of them are empty because notebooks can also just sit on a shelf and look pretty! THEY DON'T HAVE TO SERVE A PURPOSE OTHER THAN MAKING ME HAPPY RIGHT) I was in HomeGoods the other day (anD THEY HAVE THE CUTEST NOTEBOOKS EVER OMG) and I'm like "NOTEBOOKS THERE ARE MORE NOTEBOOKS OVER HERE" and my mom is just like "stop" XD

Also I am definitely guilty of zoning out all the time. NOTHING IS MORE ENTERTAINING THAN STARING AT MY CEILING AND THINKING ABOUT MY BOOKS. <3 oh and I get super annoyed when people give me their story ideas or say "you're a writer? YOU SHOULD WRITE A BOOK ABOUT ME" and I'm just like "lol no thank you" xD But! I will say that the book I'm going to write for NaNo was kind of an idea my sister gave me?? SO IDK I GUESS THE PERSON GIVING THE IDEA HAS TO BE A WRITER AND THEN I'M LIKE OK THIS IS #LEGIT

beautiful post Megan omg I could ramble on all night SOMEONE STAHP ME <3333

    1. I haven't checked HomeGoods!! But I don't know if we have one where I LIVE NOOOO!!!! *wails* #smalltownproblems K I'M LOOKING ONLINE BECAUSE I TOTALLY NEED MORE NOTEBOOKS. xD

I always end up staring at something without even thinking about it like the curtains, the walls, my brother's face, and he is just like "What are you looking at what is wrong with you" lol

I'm totally never going to be a biography writer because I always laugh at people when they ask me to write about them. haha oops. :P

I AM SO STOKED FOR NANO!! It will be my first one, and I am super excited!! I am not registering online, because I'm SUPER private about my writing. :p (shrinks because that will probably keep me from being a famous author but whatever)

THANK YOU SO MUCH ABBIEE YOU ARE SO KIND!! ♥♥♥

  10. UGH ALL THE QUESTIONS. I hates them. With a passion. Just why. XD

And I LOVEEE the hour of quiet to write. Especially at night when everyone's asleep. The whole neighborhood is just SILENT and that's why my imagination can finally come ALIVE. It's such a beautiful time and I'm already excited for that time of night tonight again so I can do alll the plotting for NANO AHHH. xD
