City of Ember Book Review

Hello, everyone! In my May month in review post, I mentioned that I was going to do a review on the City of Ember book series. I recently bought and read all of the books, and I LOVE them!

There are four books in this series, and while I was originally going to do a review for all of them, it would be WAY too long if I did that! Instead, I will just review the first book, since I think it is the most important (and the best) of them all. Enjoy!

Talk of war and mass destruction that threatened to wipe out mankind made a group of scientists realize that they needed to come up with a plan to preserve the human race. The plan they came up with was to build an underground city called Ember. The city ran on a huge generator, and storerooms were stocked to the brim with food and supplies to last for several hundred years. They appointed a mayor, who would be given possession of a box with a timed lock set to two hundred years. The box would be passed down to each successive mayor, until, at the end of the deadline, the box would automatically unlock, revealing instructions for the safe exit of the city. Their hope was that by that time, the destruction would be over, and when the citizens of Ember emerged from their cave, they could start life over again on the earth. However, the box was forgotten, the two hundred years ran out, and the lock quietly clicked open. The generator continued to work, and life in the city continued as normal. Then, there were blackouts. At random, unpredictable times, the lights in the city would flicker and die, leaving everything in complete darkness, sometimes even for several minutes. To Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet, this only meant one thing: their city was dying, and they needed to find a way out.

The storyline of this book was really good. Sometimes books like this can tend to "dip" and make me lose interest, but this one really kept me into the story the whole time. I also feel like I really got to know the characters well. The author was really good about displaying their personalities, which helped explain why they made certain choices.

By the end of this book, I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series. It has an ending that makes it possible to just read the first book, but it also makes you curious to know what happens. I didn't get the rest of the series for a long time after I read this book, but I recommend getting them all at the same time! Five stars for this book and the whole series!

Have you read the City of Ember series?
What do you think of it?

  5. This sounds super interesting...hmm...guess I'll have to check to see if my local library has it. (PROBABLY NOT THOUGH THEY DON'T CARRY ANYTHING NEW UGHHHH)
But you have a really nice blog, Megan! Your post about "12 things every large family kid knows to be true" is spot-on. My family is actually really small, but we're basically super SUPER (too good for our own good) close to another family who have a lot of kids, and um. YEAH. You nailed it ^_^
